In addition this, there are an array of restaurants in Derby to keep your stomachs filled with delicious food after a long day of site seeing and visiting the stately homes. Below is a selection to get you started on the trail of some of the UK's grandest domiciles.

Renishaw Hall

Dating from the seventeenth century Renishaw Hall is still the family home of the Sitwell family. It's a three-storey building dominating a deep valley northeast of Chesterfield, and in the 1800s numerous changes were made to it including the addition of stables and follies in the park. Later additions included a beautiful Italianate garden, a park and a lake.

Sudbury Hall

Sudbury Hall dates from the late 17th-century. It boasts interior woodcarvings by Grinling Gibbons, and Louis Laguerre plasterwork and murals. The Grand Staircase is one of the most celebrated of its type in this country and it featured in the film ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Peveril Castle

Peveril Castle was named after William Peverel, one of King William’s knights who built the castle after the Norman Conquest. The castle has undergone numerous transformations; Henry II added an impressive keep in 1176 and in the 13th century the Great Hall was built; though the outstanding views have been a constant. Recently English Heritage has been instrumental in conserving the castle and also allowing access to previously hidden chambers.

Kedleston Hall

Built between 1759 and 1765 for the Curzon family, who have lived in the area since the 12th century, this house has the best-preserved Robert Adam interior in England. Adam also designed the surrounding park that includes lakes and cascades among other picturesque features.

Haddon Hall

Set in the Peak District, the fortified medieval manor house, Haddon Hall is the home of Lord and Lady Edward Manners whose family have owned it since 1567. The house is surrounded by terraced Elizabethan gardens and has featured in films and TV programmes including ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and BBC's adaptation of ‘Jane Eyre’.

With a number of beautiful stately homes to visit, it may be better for visitors to stay for at least a weekend at a hotel in Derby, to ensure they have enough time allocated to visit each location. If you decide to just one of the homes, or visit them all, you will certainly be impressed!
